A real Korean high school student’s skin secret — and it has nothing to do with products.

okay so I used to think bad skin was a product problem.

I kept switching toners, trying new serums, spending way too much at Olive Young (Korea’s biggest beauty store). and my skin still wasn’t calming down.

if you’ve read my [60-Second Emergency Routine], you already know about the foam hack. but that’s actually just one piece of a bigger habit change I made around the same time.

turns out the issue wasn’t what I was putting on my face. it was what I was doing to my face.

I started the “Zero-Touch” rule about three months ago and honestly? it made more of a difference than anything I’d bought.

here’s what it actually looks like.

Rule #1: Wash Your Hands Before You Touch Your Face 🧼

this one sounds too obvious to even mention. but I wasn’t doing it consistently, and I’m guessing a lot of people aren’t either.

your hands touch your phone, your keyboard, door handles — basically everything — before they touch your face. if you skip washing them, you’re just moving all of that onto your skin.

twenty seconds with soap. that’s it. it’s the cheapest skincare step there is.

Rule #2: Lukewarm Water, Not Hot 💦

hot water feels nice but it’s not great for your skin — it strips away the natural oils your skin actually needs. cold water isn’t the answer either.

lukewarm is the middle ground that actually works.

and when you splash your face, keep it gentle. no scrubbing, no pressure. just water.

Rule #3: Stop Using the Bathroom Towel 🛑

I used to hate this idea, but it’s the #1 reason my skin cleared up.

The Problem: Your bathroom towel? It’s a bacteria party. 🦠 Drying your face with it = rubbing germs into your pores. Gross.

The Fix: I switched to disposable tissues. Since I’m a student on a budget, I use the 2,000 KRW ($1.50) pack from Daiso.

Why I love it:

  • Total “God-sung-bi” (갓성비): Insane value for money.
  • Super Clean: Fresh sheet every single time.
  • Results: My skin got so much calmer in just 2 weeks.

Seriously, skip the $50 serum and try this $1.50 hack first. Your skin will thank you! ✨

Rule #4: The Foam Hack — No Cotton Pad, No Friction ☁️

this is the same hack from my [60-Second Emergency Routine] — if you haven’t read that one yet, that’s a good place to start.

instead of dragging a cotton pad across my face, I pour my Bioderma Hydrabio Tonique into a foam pump bottle.

it comes out as soft foam that just sits on your skin — no pulling, no rubbing. I press it on gently and it absorbs on its own.

Final Thoughts

none of these are exciting changes. that’s kind of the point.

the stuff that actually works is usually boring. wash your hands. use lukewarm water. grab a fresh tissue. stop dragging cotton pads around. no viral product, no haul, no unboxing.

these four rules work best when you pair them with a solid routine — I use them every morning before my [60-Second Emergency Routine] or my [5-Step Morning Routine], depending on how much time I have.

your skin doesn’t need more products. sometimes it just needs you to leave it alone a little more.

try just one rule this week. then let me know in the comments — the towel swap or the foam hack, which one surprised you more? 👇 I’m genuinely curious.

I’m getting into toner pads next — which ones are actually worth it for sensitive skin, and which ones I’d skip. if you’ve been eyeing anything from the Mediheal line or the Olive Young drugstore shelf, that one’s for you.
